We are a community oriented VFW
Post with meetings every second Tuesday of the month, 7pm, in the Senior Center Lodge building, situated directly behind the McHenry Moose Lodge on Rt. 31, north of McHenry.
Local veterans
are encouraged to join. Keeping the numbers up is a key factor in the
continual effort within our government to protect and maintain veterans’
benefits.
Every year, this Post sponsors
a Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies, held on each Memorial Day Monday. All the
Community is encourage to not only view these events but to participate in a
patriotic fashion. One of our primary goals being to help educate the younger
generation in the ‘true’ meaning of this holiday. At the conclusion of these
ceremonies there is a Community Picnic which is sponsored by a large part of the
village civic and public organizations – a true community event.
Voice of Democracy Program, an essay program
which is held in the Johnsburg High School; and the Youth Essay Contest, which
is held in grades 6, 7, 8. Both programs offer scholarship rewards, with the
winners eligible for a chance of going on to the State, or even National level
of competition.
American Flag Disposal: Worn, tattered, unusable American Flags will be
accepted at the Johnsburg Library any time during their regular business
hours. These will then be picked up by the VFW when, at a later date, they
will be properly and ceremoniously burned.
