February 2015

  1. Library Closing:

The library was closed on Sunday, Feb. 1 due to the blizzard conditions.

  1. Staff In-service:

I have planned a staff in-service for Friday afternoon, Feb. 27, focusing on safety.  The Chief of Police will come in to do a presentation for the staff on how to best handle certain situations that may arise when dealing with the public.  We’ll also go over fire and tornado procedures.  I had hoped to have IMRF do a presentation for the entire staff on the new Long Term Care Insurance option, but have been unable to make that happen.

  1. “One Book, One Johnsburg”:

Heather has been busy planning for a new event this summer, which we are very excited about.  Please plan on participating and spread the word!  This is the text of an email I sent to library patrons who I know are in their own local book club, describing the “One Book, One Johnsburg” program:

We are going to try something new this summer called "One Book, One Johnsburg", similar to what other communities have done where everyone reads the same book and the library has related programming.  The book we've chosen is "Shotgun Lovesongs" by Nickolas Butler.  Everyone who read it here at the library just loved it, and we all have varying tastes in what types of books we read and enjoy.  The book got a rave review in People Magazine:  "Sparkles in every way. A love letter to the open lonely American heartland…A must-read."  It was also an Amazon Best Book of the Month for March 2014.

And we have booked the author for an appearance at the library on Tuesday evening, August 4!  We will also be purchasing 100 copies of the paperback edition of the book to GIVE AWAY starting in mid-June.  You must have a Johnsburg Library card in order to get the free copy.  We will have other copies available for checkout from interlibrary loan if someone does not have a Johnsburg card.  The book's main character is a rock star from Wisconsin, which ties in with this summer's statewide music-themed summer reading program.  We've already planned lots of related programs - from music events to Midwest cooking demos to Jim May storytelling.  Look for our June newsletter for complete details.

As you plan your books for the year, please keep "One Book, One Johnsburg" in mind.  Since the books will be available starting in mid-June and the author is appearing August 4, making "Shotgun Lovesongs" your book for July would probably be the best timing.  Let me know if you have any questions.

“One Book, One Johnsburg” will be incorporated into the usual Adult Summer Reading Program, which will still take place.

  1. Business Expo:

This year the annual Business Expo is on the 2nd Saturday in March (the 14th).  The Johnsburg High School Art Department’s annual Bowl of Arts fundraiser will be taking place at the same time, to hopefully draw more people into both events.  Attached is a flyer describing the combined event.
