January 2011
  1. Holiday wreath sale fundraiser:
For the past couple of years, the Iodice family of McHenry has sponsored a wreath sale, with a percentage of the profit going towards our Homeschool Resource Center. This year we received a check for $30.45.
  1. New eBook subscription:
We’ve had a number of patrons inquire recently as to whether we have an eBook subscription, especially since many of them received eBook readers for Christmas (and Barnes and Noble is steering them toward their public library). eBooks appear as text on digital readers such as the Barnes and Noble Nook and the iPhone and the iPad – to name a few. We currently have a downloadable eAudiobook subscription (books you listen to), but not an eBook subscription. I inquired about joining the PALS eBook consortium and found out the deadline to join for this year was December 31. Since this was before our board meeting, I went ahead and authorized an annual subscription for $3,000. Attached is an overview of the consortium called OMNI, which uses the digital content provider OverDrive. Patrons who have purchased Amazon’s Kindle must still purchase their eBooks from Amazon, since the Kindle is not compatible with any currently available eBook library subscription plan.
